His drill team director was the founder of this contest, Sis, Kay Jordan. During his time with the Lord’s Warriors he held leadership roles as the stepline co-captain, stepline captain, co-commander, and commander. Darvel went on to college and completed undergraduate and graduate programs in Management: Business Administration in 2013 and 2018. His professional background includes banking, financial management, event planning, marketing, promotions, business consulting, nonprofit fundraising, managing political campaigns, conference planning, supervising, mentoring, and in diversity, equity, and inclusion. Most notably he served on the initial mayoral campaign of Mayor Quentin Hart, Waterloo’s first black mayor in 2015. He went on to serve as the campaign manager of Ras Smith, when he initially became the State Representative for Iowa House District 62 in 2016. Over the next 48 years, she served as director of seven different Waterloo drill teams: Union Baptist Crusaders-19 years, A.A.R.T.S.’ Boogie Knytze-2 years, Jubilee UMC’s Northwind-one season, Christian Fellowship’s Faith Steppers- 3 years, Mt. Carmel’s Lord’s Warriors- 9 years, Kingdom Regiment (an independent drill team)- 3 years, and as coach for East High’s Trojan Nation for a season, . For Three years Kay also coordinated a culture-specific substance abuse prevention project for youth called SoulBeat, and, in addition, served many years as a church musician. In 2001 she established the Midwest regional drill team competition known as “Marching Against the Darkness,” serving as Contest Manager/Director for the first 10 years. Where at an early age of 6yrs old she started out in the Lords Warriors Drill Team, where for love for dance, drums and flags came about. In the early 2000’s she was introduced to color guard from Sis Kay Jordan. This is where her passion began for flag work. It taught her different techniques and disciplines. She met new people, learned different style of art, and it helped with her confidence. With her confidence it helped her understand that to be a part of drill team she didn’t have to be a drummer or a dancer. One thing she wants the youth to take from this class is the simple technique of twirling a flag, to be free and over all be yourself. You don’t have to be a dancer or a drummer to spin a flag. He attended Wartburg college where he received his BA in World History Education and wrestled all 4 years. After college, Chris began his education career at George Washington Carver Academy. While teaching there, he received his Masters degree in Social Science from the University of Northern Iowa. Chris currently teaches history at East High School where he also serves as the lead wrestling coach. He has taught and coached in the Waterloo School District for 12 years. He was a 2021 recipient of Cedar Valley’s 20 Under Forty and the 2023-2024 NE Iowa District 3A wrestling coach of the year. He was recently chosen as a candidate for the Lead Waterloo program. He also serves on the board of directors for Tri-County Headstart and was a former board member for the Waterloo Writing Project. Since then, she engaged in dance, theater, and vocal lessons to improve her skill. At the young age of 18years Timina began teaching dance at her home church. She was honored with the privilege of choreographing a dance for Mason Betha during the annual Word Explosion at Celebrations Church. From that time, Timina has done dance clinics for local churches, coached her high school alma mater dance and cheer squads, and has enjoyed choreographing dances for her two daughters who have also been blessed with the gift of dance. He served as Head Drum Major, Head Drum Captain and helped with operations of the group for several years. He was the youngest tenor drum captain in Rock Island High School Marching Band. His dad Ken Martin was famously known as one of the “Founding Fathers” of the drill team and he worked tirelessly to keep that legacy alive. Because of drill team KC was able to be flown to Washington DC to talk about youth empowerment and perform for President Barack Obama. He is currently serving as the Riot Pro Wrestling General Manager and is enjoying his new role in pro wrestling. KC Martin believes in the power of opportunities and continues to guide and mentor people of all ages to seek their dreams. KC Martin’s slogan is “Just Keep Marching” and will continue to push people to march to their dreams and goals until they can’t march anymore. KC has been known to work with up and coming drill team drum lines and is excited to teach some of these techniques in his session. She later moved to Clarksville, TN where she resides part time, when she is not here in Waterloo, and she has three children. Alexis obtained her bachelor’s in public administration from Upper Iowa and later received her master’s in business administration from, thee Tennessee State University. She has previously held positions with Hawkeye Community College, the State of Tennessee, a federal government agency. J. Jordan. Our present leadership is provided by Pastor Marvin D. Jenkins, and Crusaders’ directors, Sis. Gertha Oliver, and Sis. Pat Bowers. Crusaders Drill Team and Drumline is made up of young people, ages 5 to 25. All of them are active members of their home church, serving as choir members, ushers, Sunday School students or praise dancers. In past seasons, Crusaders have appeared all over the Midwest in parades, performances and contests, including the 2019 Gateway Competition in Kansas City, KS, where they took first place. The team consists of over 40 youth ages 6-18 years old from Kansas City, KS. The Highsteppers have withstood the test of time growing from 13 members in 1997 to over 150 members in 2013. The team originated from Gateway Townhomes Plaza and broke off from the Townhome Plaza in 2001 keeping the name “Gateway Highsteppers”. The motto of the Gateway Highsteppers is “Motivated Youth In Action.” The vision of the team is to provide a positive outlet for youth through dance and music. All Members must maintain a “C” or better average in all classes as grades are checked regularly by staff. Members are expected to have a good quality of character even when they are not in uniform.
